Clueless in Communication

Meg was Sleepless in Seattle and, me, well, I'm utterly clueless in communication.

Most people assume that the pastor's wife knows everything that's going on.  Well, this one doesn't.  I can't even begin to tell you how many times I've given the deer-in-the-headlights stare or simply had to say, "I'm sorry, but I'm not sure what you're talking about."

There's just that common misperception that I'm in the loop on everything concerning my pastor hubby.  Just because we share the same bed, doesn't mean we share every aspect of each other's lives.  Why, you may ask?  Here's a few reasons:
  1. He doesn't share everything with me to protect me
  2. Some of it just is not my business
  3. Other things just aren't important enough to discuss
  4. He forgets
  5. We do have a life outside the church and sometimes church business is strictly off topic so we can enjoy that life
  6. I'm only at the church on Sundays and Wednesdays just like most everyone else.  In the past I was there more because of internet access.  Now we have it at home and he is proficient enough to do most of his business on his own now while at the office.  I only come in on Wednesday afternoons and play "secretary" that day.
  7. I don't go to Tuesday morning prayer meetings anymore and I haven't since mid-summer.  So, no, I didn't know your aunt was sick.
  8. On Wednesday nights I'm with my GA girls and if you asked for prayer for your upcoming surgery, I didn't know, and he may have forgotten to tell me.  Sorry.
  9. I don't know all the juicy details and if I did I wouldn't share them.  Sometimes I am a part of ministering/counseling and others he just asks me to sit in another room.  It protects him, me, and the other party.
  10. He knows that if I knew everything that was said, planned, instituted, discussed, I would be less pleasant than I am now.
It seems I've landed in some hot water this week.  I made a comment that was purely about me and my situation and it was taken out of context and applied to someone else and their situation.  I didn't even know about their situation until later that night.  When I did find out I was floored and shocked.  So, now I've been equated to the Enemy, the Devil, Satan.  Mercy.  I admit the timing was bad.  But the comment I made was about me and only me.  Clueless I was and clueless I remain.

Totally know what you are talking about. No matter the size of a church there are always some who will be offended no matter what you did or did not mean.

I love that you have given yourself permission to have a life outside of church and not feel you have to be present every time the church doors open. Yay for freedom!

So you are saying that your husband the pastor does not read you the church bulletin in bed right? LOL!

Nope we don't read the bulletin in bed! :)

And, there are certain individuals who think I can do no right, but I've been called to minister to them whether they want me to or not. Sigh.

So I've been out of the commenting loop for a while. Confession: I often read your posts late at night on my phone while in bed - which means I intend to comment the next day but usually forget.

I'm glad for your sake that on some things you're just clueless. :)

#4 made me smile. I guess it's universal.

#5 makes me happy for you all because it's just so healthy.

#3 and #7 had me smiling, just because.
